A Senseless Taboo
I agree that the 2nd Amendment allows individuals (not just militias) to own guns but we desperately need to combat the political climate that treats the mere discussion of any restrictions as an attempt to repeal the right altogether.
For instance, I'd have a hard time being convinced that the joker responsible for this 7 year old should continue to have a right to his weapons and I'd be interested to hear a representative from the NRA (or any one else) argue otherwise....

Americans have taken their freedom to own guns (which, I believe, as you do, is protected by the Second Amendment) to a disturbing level that can only be characterized as gun-worship. Many people who own guns act like they are carrying around precious relics, and the mere mention of monitoring them or restricting them is akin to blasphemy.
I don't know how we came to fetishize devices that have as their explicit purpose to harm or kill other people. (I'm not talking about guns used for, e.g., hunting.) I can understand the desire to have a gun to protect one's home and one's family, but at least have the decency to be reluctant and sad about it. At least have the decency to think to yourself, "I wish the world was such that I didn't feel like I have to own this." But no, we salivate excitedly while we buy our guns, and we pet them and stroke them and love them while Charlton Heston winks at us. Frankly, I think it's perverse.
